Hot and Cold Therapy Effective for Stroke
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Alternating hot and cold therapy can help rehabilitate the paralyzed hands and arms of stroke survivors, reports a new study.
Nearly 85 percent of people who survive a stroke have some degree of impairment in one of their upper limbs. Recovery of that function is often poor.
Researchers from Taiwan studied 46 people treated for acute stroke. Some patients received standard rehab, while others received rehab in addition to thermal stimulation. Thermal stimulation is a common treatment sometimes used to treat muscle spasticity or pain in stroke patients. It's rarely used, however, for neurorehabilitation.
