Drs. William Levine and Andre Panagos stress the importance of safety in your summer sporting events. The following tips will help keep you from the dreaded tennis-elbow, sprained ankle, etc...
- Start slow: After a long winter of being inactive, remember to take it easy; it'll take a while to get back into the shape you were in last summer.
- Warm up: To reduce the threat of injury, first get your blood flowing by taking a few minutes to gently stretch and prepare your muscles.
- RICE: This acronym (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) can and should be used for a number of sports injuries.
- Break frequently: Even tennis pros break between sets; taking a rest doesn't mean that you need to stop all activity, just give your heavily working body parts a chance to relax for a minute or two.
- Listen to your body: Ignoring your body's minor pains can lead to a more serious injury, so take the hints that your body provides.
Dr. William Levine, chief of sports medicine, and Dr. Andre Panagos, assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine, both work for the New York-Presbyterian Hospital system.
